Climate Initiatives (CLI)

Duration: 2023-2025

Location:  Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral, Sindh

Donor:  Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN)

Project Description:    The Climate Initiative (CLI) addresses the urgent challenges posed by climate change to agriculture, food security, and natural ecosystems in the fragile mountain environments of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral. These regions, already facing pressures from environmental degradation, changing weather patterns, and resource depletion, require innovative and community-driven solutions to build resilience and safeguard livelihoods.

CLI promotes regenerative, climate-smart, and conservation agriculture practices that aim to restore soil health, conserve water, increase biodiversity, and boost crop and livestock productivity. By combining traditional knowledge with modern innovations, the initiative works to revive time-tested farming methods while introducing sustainable technologies that help communities adapt to evolving climate realities.

Key areas of focus include expanding forest cover through community-led plantation drives, promoting the use of organic fertilisers and sustainable soil management techniques, introducing hybrid irrigation systems to improve water availability, and supporting farmers with tools and practices that reduce erosion and improve agricultural yields. The initiative places a strong emphasis on community empowerment, working closely with local organisations to protect existing forests, promote environmental stewardship, and build awareness around climate change adaptation.
